Vermiculite (10l)
Vermiculite is a clay mineral and belongs to the class of phyllosilicates. It is formed by weathering followed by pressure and high temperatures. In order to make it usable for horticultural purposes, the raw material is bloomed at approx. 300°C, resulting in expanded vermiculite, which now has many times its original volume. This expanded form is generally referred to as expanded mica.
When used as an additive in the substrate, it demonstrates its ability as a clay mineral to absorb and release cations. The additive therefore plays a particularly important role in optimising the nutrient supply of ammonium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron, and vermiculite is also used as a growing medium. As the substrate is germ-free and almost pH-neutral, it is ideal for growing many plants. On the one hand, it is an excellent growing medium and at the same time serves as a heat-insulating covering medium.
