Charcoal has no disinfectant properties, but can bind toxic substances due to its surface structure and composition. Charcoal can also prevent the spread of bacteria. It loosens up the substrate and has only a low water retention capacity. Like all other organic substances, charcoal is subject to an ageing or decomposition process, but this takes place very, very slowly.
Barbecue charcoal is not an alternative to this charcoal.
